Structure plan for Köping waterfront

A structure plan for the waterfront area in the small town of Köping (ca. 20.000 inhabitants) in Sweden, with a relatively mono-cultural economy relying on heavy industry and struggling with a decreasing and aging population.

The project included a careful on-site area analysis, an analysis of socio-spatial survey results, building and land-use inventory, as well as mapping of the areas internal and external connections.

The structure plan proposed a human scale, mixed-use 3 phased development with a strong focus of adapting to the existing environment and  harnessing the areas identity, implementing diverse transportation infrastructure by e.g. reusing old cargo train tracks as a green and quiet pedestrian/cycling path, increasing livability and land-value.

The area plans proposed four diverse areas, seeking to create differentiation of atmospheres between them on a smaller scale than traditionally planned. The areas included a communal building, combined kindergarten and nursing home, a unique play area built on old train tracks, re-use of an old storage structure for seasonal markets.
